Michael was attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was on the baseball team. He had been attending FCA at UNL and heard about the opportunity for an internship with FCA. Michael was interested in this because he had a great experience serving on the leadership team for FCA at UNL and saw all that FCA offered him as an athlete, and wanted to learn more about FCA. So Michael applied and completed the internship, but wanted to return the next summer to complete the internship again because he felt that he hadn't met some of the expectations of the internship. He didn't do it justice. He had grown a lot and had some convictions to do it again to honor God by completing the internship to the best of his ability.
So, overall, through the internship, Michael realized that he was competing for himself -- competing in a way that didn't line up with Scripture and God's ultimate call for his life. This conviction led him to change his attitude as an athlete and a desire grew to serve his team. He began looking for intentional ways to love his team well. He realized making an impact for eternity far outweighs any and all success on the field as an athlete.
So, he began to stay late after practice, shag balls for the hitters, and serve his teammates. He wanted to show that his life had changed -- and Jesus Christ was the one who changed it. His identity was shifted away from being a baseball player. His identity was rooted in being the child of the King.
After completing the internship the second time, Michael was not set on joining FCA Staff. He did have a desire to be involved in FCA in some way, but he wanted to be a game warden. But doors were closed in that career, but the door was open to join staff.
Overall, Michael would advocate for any internship that is centered around the gospel, because that will always be beneficial -- if you get the gospel correct and submit to God's Word. But Michael would especially advocate for the FCA internship for anyone who is athletically minded, because he says that seeing the need for the gospel in the sports world is what Nebraska FCA does best.
