Coach For Christ

One of the main focuses of the internship is learning what it means to be and how to be a coach for Christ.

In order to explore this subject, in the internship, you:


  • shadow a local coach in the area and go to their team workouts
  • get trained on how to Do Sports God's Way
  • attend weekly DSGW coaching prep calls in preparation for coaching drills at Leadership Camp
  • complete a 3D coaching curriculum course
  • develop a coaching philosophy
  • develop a 3D coaching planner
  • interview local coaches and athletic directors

SHADOWING A COACH FOR CHRIST
Adam Wehrman's Experience // 2021 Summer Intern


Adam shadowed Lincoln Northeast High School's head football coach. He would go twice a week and spend time with the coach and his athletes. Coach would assign speed and agility drills for Adam to run for the athletes. Adam helped a lot with set up and tear down for each training session, and would help supervise stations while the athletes conditioned and completed work outs. Adam had never been in charge of athletes before, so he felt that this experience was valuable to help him get comfortable being in charge. He also saw great qualities in the coach he shadowed, seeing the great patience he displayed with his athletes. He would also bring truth and scripture into what he was coaching, like when he paraphrased the story of David and Goliath from the Bible as an illustration in his coaching. This was encouraging and a great example for Adam to follow.


DOING SPORTS GOD'S WAY

Doing Sports God's Way is all about learning how to participate in sports, give your all, and glorify God in the process. In the internship, you get extensive training on DSGW and how to lead others to compete with a kingdom mindset as well. You learn how to guide people through their competition, exposing their heart attitudes (sin), extracting the lies that they are believing, and exchanging the lies for the truth of the Gospel. Then they can apply this truth and enter into competition freely, using it as worship for God instead of self.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY

In the internship, you learn a lot about coaching, and at the end of all your observations and learning, you get to develop a coaching philosophy unique to you and what you value. Here are a few examples of coaching philosophies:
