Bailey served as huddle leader at FCA camps in the summer of 2019, and absolutely loved being at camp. While at camp, he heard that people were interns with FCA, and thought it could be a fun opportunity and was interested in learning more about FCA and what being on staff looks like.
Then Bailey completed the internship a second time, because his first go-round was right after covid, and he missed out on some opportunities like camps and interacting with coaches locally. He also wanted to keep discerning where God was leading him in his future.
Bailey's biggest takeaway from the internship was probably uncovering his desire to be a coach. Interacting with coaches and seeing the impact they could have was exciting to Bailey. God grew this desire in him, and while he still doesn't know exactly what this will look like, he knows he wants to get into coaching in some capacity.
A highlight for Bailey was getting to take this desire to be a coach and get some practice and experience coaching while in the internship. For his summer project in 2021, he was able to lead technique sessions at Distance Camp. He was able to dive into understanding the mechanics and physical aspect of the sport, and produce it in a coaching setting at camp. This was his first time leading and coaching a large group. He was able to talk to lots of coaches and get input and advice beforehand to create a practice plan effectively and efficiently.
Not only has Bailey grown in his coaching journey and desire, but he grew in his faith and relationship with the Lord as well. He had the chance to gain a better understanding of how to study the Bible and how to approach it. He can better understand the text and not just read it.
Bailey also really enjoyed being in the office every day and interacting with staff. He loved having conversations with more mature and wise believers, hearing wisdom from them every day. The staff also challenged him to grow, keeping him accountable, which he is really thankful for.
When asked if other students should complete the internship and why, Bailey replied, "Yes. Because it's fun. Because you should." And that's really all there is to it!
But in all seriousness, the internship is geared towards students exploring FCA Staff in the future or coaching for Christ. Bailey really encourages the internship if you are interested in one of these two, but even if you're not. You will grow spiritually and be challenged in other ways beyond staff and coaching by going through this internship.
